![]() ![]() SRWare Iron Can't Be Trusted - At Least Not Yet! from one Disgruntled Grizzly Bear to another. What happens if SRWare Iron inherits a critical vulnerability from chrome that is being exploited in the wild, will the developers find the time to update in a similar fashion as the chrome developers would? Unless we check the thousands of lines of source code every time a new version is released, how do we know their not slipping in their own backdoor? maybe push chromium developers to care a little more about users privacy thus eliminating the need for SRWare Iron. to reflect program version with official chrome builds, it's at 8.x while chrome is climbing up to versions 9.x and 10.x to change the name from something less memorable like SRWare Iron to something like "Chrome stripped of privacy invading features" to use the official chrome website for extensions ![]() to host the source code on, , or Google Code (instead hosting 3 zip files on *puke* ) If we don't want another niche browser, someone tell these guys/this person. Here is the Updated Fanboy Main List with Stat/Tracking Sites converted to Srware Iron adblock.ini format: Here is a VBScript to make the changes from Opera urlfilter.ini to Iron adblock.ini Provides several work-arounds, including links to files necessary to create a customized adblock.ini as follows. On SRwares web site adblock.ini is at but is dated. "To block malicious ad servers, add adblock.ini to the "Iron" program folder."Įxtracting IronPortable.zip places an empty adblock.ini in the Iron folder. The link to adblock.ini is broken in the paragraph, I have Flash disabled on all but two sites which use the older version just fine. the latest update to Flash 18 works, however. Note: trying to install the latest Adobe Flash for Firefox crashed my XP system, XP is basically no longer supported with version 19. Maybe someone will figure out how to "port" this to Iron without doing a bunch of stuff in file explorers etc. Install 43, which still supports the (old) flash players (be they however insecure.)Ĭhrome itself has a built in alternative to Flash in the latest version. ![]() If you have no need for Flash or most other browser plug-ins, feel free, you'll be secure (but missing quite a bit of content.)Īlternatives: Do not update to 45. If you don't, be aware you're installing malware. The former plug-ins do not work, and the latest download which would be supported in Iron contains malware, checked by over 40 different engines and cannot be installed if you have ANY anti-malware engine running. You cannot add Flash support to version 45 of Iron. I understand this is a security issue, however, if you do need Flash, this is not the browser for you. They also create the following folders/files:Ĭ:\Users\*\AppData\Local\Chromium\User DataĬ:\Users\*\AppData\Local\Chromium\User Data\CrashpadĬ:\Users\*\AppData\Local\Chromium\User Data\Crashpad\metadataĬ:\Users\*\AppData\Local\Chromium\User Data\Crashpad\reportsĬ:\Users\*\AppData\Local\Chromium\User Data\Crashpad\settings.dat The only Chromium browser that doesn't create these keys is Chromium Portable ( ). I can see it being created using Regshot and get to it and delete it with an alternate registry editor. Not to mention that we use Google drive here and that's.awkwarded-out, too.Just noting that Iron Portable and SRWare Iron Portable, as well as GoogleChromePortable and X-Chromium, create these registry keys:Īlso note that the HKLM key is hidden in regedit. I'd bookmarked a number of complicated debugging URLs with gets out the wazoo, I'd white-listed work-related sites in all of my plugins, just several months worth of stuff backed up to that account sync, and I'd rather not have to reconstruct all of it from scratch. I'm a web developer so I need to see how pages look with Chrome's engine, but I don't want to actually use Chrome, so I need to get this all working again. I login, do my two-factor bit, and then it redirects me to a page where my username is populated but still prompts me for my password, and when I enter it, it just endlessly redirects to chrome://chrome-signin/?source=2 (And taking off the source=2 thing doesn't change anything I already tried it.) Second, I recently upgraded to the latest Iron and Flash started having kittens Spotify's web player was a particular problem, since IT policy on my workstation means I can't actually install Spotify, so as per Google's Chrome documentation, I renamed my User profile folder and restarted Iron.and now I can't login to the browser with my work gmail stuff to get my bookmarks and etc back. ![]()
